Darius Cebrián.Home is behind The world ahead. And there are many paths to tread. Through shadow, To the edge of night Until the stars are all alight
Mist and shadow Cloud and shade All shall fade All shall... fade.
OOC alias: Sellis experience: 6 or 7 years how did you find us: I made it other characters: Susan rules password: how about no?
THE BASICS name: Darius Cebrián nicknames: Darry, Dar age: 30 birthdate: Mid-summer race&species: Telmarine, human rank: lower-class occupation: Pirate, occasional legal trader, and sometime spy.
THE PHYSICAL body type: Darius is relatively thin, as travelling around on ships makes it hard to get a steady supply of food. Also because of his time spent on ships, he is fairly muscular. hair: Darius' hair is quite long and most often tied back in a tail. When out on the sea, his hair becomes quite straight, due to the ocean spray, salt, and general humidity. When on land, it can become extremely curly, which is probably his natural hair type, though he tries to keep it mostly straight. His hair is a common, dark brown colour like most Telmarines, though it does get somewhat bleached by the sunlight and salt water, but it never gets very much lighter. eyes: Darius has warm brown eyes that can - and will - turn cold at a moment's notice. height: 5'10 weight: 150 lbs facial features: Darius has always had a rather scruffy look to him because of his bit of a beard. He never lets it grow long, and occasionally shaves it off completely. clothing: If one knew how a typical sailor dressed, that would be how Darius did. Off-white cotton tunics are his preferred shirts, with billowing sleeves and a loose body, built to survive a long time at sea without ripping or wearing out. Usually there is a v-neck with a tie at the top, for ease of changing. For jackets, he sticks to the long, water-resistant variety, usually in a dark colour. Also, underneath he will usually have a long vest or jerkin of some type. For trousers, he chooses very simple, yet tough ones, in either black or brown. His boots are also either black or brown, and made of a fairly waterproof leather. If he goes for anything more proper or "fancy", he either wears a particularly clean set of his usual wear or goes for something with a bit more colour, usually dark red shirts.
Darius is never without his many accessories. His hair is almost always tied back with some form of tie or covered with a bandana. His body is adorned with many accoutrements, particularly the belt around his waist that carries a sheathed sword. His sword is not the typical broadsword that the Lords prefer; his is a lighterweight, thin weapon that is very useful for one in his profession. Often a water resistant leather bag hangs over one shoulder and across his chest whenever he is on land. In his boots are small knives that he rarely goes without, as he is a skilled knife fighter. For jewelery, he has very litte: a stained wooden carving hangs on a leather thong around his neck, and a few clumsily made brass rings adorn his fingers. Very little that he carries has any monetary worth except for his sword, and he will fight to keep that. racial features: n/a anything else: Darius has many scars from his adventures out on the sea. playby: Orlando Bloom general description:
Darius has a fairly typical look for a Telmarine. His hair is quite long and most often tied back in a tail. When out on the sea, it becomes quite straight, due to the ocean spray, salt, and general humidity. When on land, it can become extremely curly, which is probably his natural hair type, though he tries to keep it mostly straight. His hair is a common, dark brown colour, like most Telmarines have, though it does get somewhat bleached by the sunlight and salt water, but the colour rarely changes very much. His warm brown eyes are intelligent and not at all what one might expect from a pirate - until they gain an icy edge that he is known for. They have a squinted look to them, from so many years spent on the brilliantly reflective sea. His thin eyebrows are a couple shades darker than his hair and give him a rather intense look, whether he intends it or not. Pale, thin lips are often surrounded by a scruffy hint of a goatee and mustache. Although he does shave it entirely from time to time, he likes to keep it short and fairly neat, while keeping his scruffy pirate image intact. Those lips are well known for wearing a careless smirk or a crooked smile, and for tempting young ladies with charming words and empty promises.
For one of his age, Darius is quite small and compact, his height at most 5 feet, 10 inches. His body is definitely one of an athlete, though he wouldn't know what that meant. Usually he is described as quite the acrobat, being able to leap from sail to sail in a very graceful manner, though he doesn't sacrifice any of his image, as this makes him an excellent sailor. He is quite strong for his size as well. Though he is not overtly muscular, he has very wiry muscles. His skin is quite tanned, both because of his Telmarine heritage and his days spent out in the elements. Also Also, Darius has quite a collection of scars, with a particularly large amount on his back. Oddly enough, he refuses to speak of his scars, becoming very closed and angry when asked about them, rather than most pirates who tend to invent stories to go with each one.
THE MENTAL likes: dislikes: strengths: weaknesses: goals: fears: general personality:
A rough exterior hides the true personality of Darius. He wears the unschooled, undisciplined attitude like a mask, one that he has grown very accustomed to wearing over the years. It shows what might be considered to be quite normal for a pirate: a lady-chaser, always out to charm one lady or another, whether she be young or old, taken or not; a gambler, risking and often losing any gold that he has; a heavy drinker as alcohol does not seem to affect him in the same way it does most men, and so he can go much longer without becoming actually drunk; and a bar fighter, one with the habit of managing to get himself knocked on the head very early into the fight, though if he does stick around, he can be quite dangerous. His language is very improper and lazy, unless faced with someone of a much higher rank, and he very much enjoys using the art of sarcasm against such higher ups. This exterior is broken only by his secretive nature. He will talk and chat a lot, but he rarely actually says anything, particularly about himself and his past. He sees absolutely nothing wrong with his behaviour, as every other sailor on the seas acts just as he does. Even if this is all just a mask, these rough habits have started leaking into his true self, as he has been acting this way for many years. Very few get to see any more of him beyond this exterior of his, but there is most definitely more.
If caught at the right time of day or in the right mood, Darius can change completely. Particularly during the day, he's quite polite to his betters and even his equals, whether he thinks they deserve it or not. If someone manages to worm their way past his rough exterior, this is his usual attitude. This shows itself particularly when on land and away from the other sailors, where it would be very noticeable if he were to act like a pirate, especially when acting like a pirate might get him a dawn appointment with the gallows. Particularly to the Ladies of the court, he is very deferential and does all the appropriate acts that a gentleman would, everything from holding open a door for the ladies to fetching them something they need. While he knows that he shouldn't, when Darius tries to imagine the perfect woman for him, he always prefers the Ladies of the court, as they are well-mannered women, unlike the ones he must deal with on a regular basis.
When it comes to talking with people, Darius would really rather not. He's talkative with other sailors or people of such type, but when it comes to anyone else, he rarely speaks. He has a bit of a brooding nature, but he hides it by occupying himself with something else while he thinks, usually something like cleaning or sharpening weapons. As well as his disinclination for talking, Darius says nothing about his past. At first, it was because he did not want to be hauled off to the Telmarines for being a deserter, but now that Narnia is free once again, it is mostly in shame. He was a servant for so long, and he believes it to be shameful. Also, it isn't necessarily a good thing to announce that he was a Telmarine soldier at one point, nor to inform people that he was a pirate. He often lets the ladies he's entertaining know that he was a pirate, but no one else, for fear of execution. Usually Darius is the type that prefers not to be noticed except when he wants to be, and acts as such.
Darius might be very closed about his past, but he won't hesitate to stand up for it. He knows that he made bad decisions, but they weren't usually his decisions. It is for this reason that he often takes a liking to random people as he passes through town. Sometimes he'll share a bit of his past to aid them, or give them a bit of advice to help them on their way, or even share a bit of his hard-earned money if it seems right. Despite his unsavoury past, Darius has followed a strict moral code ever since his time in the army. No killing unless absolutely necessary and fairness to everyone are just a couple of his personal rules. His most important rule, though, is one that he can and will fight for. He has seen too many women taken unconsentingly that he will defend them. He's always respected a woman's right to say no, and always stops when she tells him to. Some other men, on the other hand, do not. It's one of the few times that he'll go out of his way to help someone he doesn't even know, even if he's putting himself in danger.
The main reason that Darius enjoys sailing and even piracy is because of the danger. He's quite reckless, at times putting himself and others in danger just for the thrill of it all. Storms, fighting, the risk of drowning - it's all just a game to him. Nothing has killed him yet, so he seems to think that when on the sea, he's almost invincible. That is not the case, and he knows that, but the feeling of power when his Lady of the Sea sends her best shot at him and he survives is almost an addiction. He needs the feeling of danger and risk to feel alive. On land, things are different, but when on the water, he endangers his own life on a daily basis. Something about the water calls to him. Perhaps it is that he can't swim, but the sea has an added danger to it that he can't quite identify, something that he needs if he wants to live. This is why he cannot stay away from the sea too long without feeling down and unhappy.
For someone who is still fairly young, Darius has an awful lot of experience under his belt. He's done quite a bit, and such an odd variety that he knows a lot about life even if he's not old. This brings a certain amount of intelligence with it, but he doesn't think himself smart. An unschooled Telmarine servant turned soldier turned pirate is obviously not as smart as, say, the Lords and Ladies with their fancy schooling. Yet ever since a child, Darius has always been very quick to pick up skills, even if he wasn't particularly good at some of the servants' jobs that he was assigned. It is this quick learning and flexibility that allows him such success as a sailor. On occasion he might share his skills with younger people, but that is all he shows of his skills. He doesn't consider himself particularly skilled; all he knows is that he enjoys certain things and so works to improve himself. It might be considered humility, his denying that he isn't particularly skilled, but for him it is not.
One thing that makes Darius so different from others is his penchant for both anger and calmness. He has very little in the way of a temper, but when that temper does flare, it can be very dangerous. It is not a scorching anger, but a cold, icy anger that burns quietly. It is this iciness that allows him to face down others with a quiet, cold rage that is, perhaps, more terrifying than a fiery temper. That anger remains calm and quiet, for shouting accomplishes nothing, in his opinion. On the other hand, his normal calmness is, oddly enough, quite warm, if usually aloof.
As a sailor, perhaps predictably, Darius is extremely superstitious and has some fairly strong, if unusual, beliefs. Every night at sea, he thanks what he calls 'my Lord and Lady of the Sea' for keeping him safe, and for every meal he thanks the earth for allowing him another day to live on. He's also been known to recite an ancient Telmarine prayer for the dead whenever he has the unfortunate task of having to kill another being. Most Telmarines have forgotten its meaning, but he makes sure to remember. There are also the more common superstitions with such things as black cats and mirrors, but he tends to keep those lesser beliefs to himself unless it effects someone he cares for.
THE HISTORICAL parents: Fidel & Clarisa Tizelle siblings: Adelia, sister history:
Darius' life has been long and hard for one who is not particularly old. He was born into a lower-class Telmarine family during the reign of Caspian IX. His family were peasants - as low as one could get in this society - and, even worse, farmers. The King's taxes were always harsh, and only got worse as time went on. From a very young age, he was forced to work all hours of the day to make ends meet, though it never seemed to make any difference. The harder they worked, the worse the taxes seemed to get, until the family was forced to sell their farm.
Unfortunately, Darius' mother had only just given birth to a little girl, Adelia. All of their money was gone, their income stopped completely. The little five year-old boy was too much work to take care of. One day, his parents took him to the market and left him there, left him to be sold off to whoever would take him. His parents would be reaping the benefits, of course; everything they did was done in the name of money and survival. It was not a kind thing to do, but the family was beyond caring about kindnesses. Darius, as young as he was, was already used to hardships, and so he went docilely along when someone announced that he'd been sold. He didn't know what it meant, nor did he really know what was going to happen. All he wanted was his parents back, but that was not to be.
His owner, his master, was not a kind man. Darius was forced to clean himself up and dress in itchy clothing just to have to go and get it all dirty by cleaning floors and walls and everything else that got covered in dirt. His master's children, all of whom were younger than he, were put into his care as time went on. Darius never cared for children; many beatings were lined up for him because of that. It was quickly apparent, though, that Darius was fairly useless as a child-minder - or any other servant's job, really - but his master tried his best to find something that would work. Eventually, he worked in the stables, learned to ride... just to absolutely hate it after being thrown a few times, the worst of which broke his arm. Horses seemed to naturally dislike him. His master just about gave up on Darius completely by that point, until he was caught playing with kitchen knives while cleaning the dishes after dinner.
He'd just begun tossing them around, not really caring what happened to him - after all, he was in for beatings almost every day, so it couldn't get any worse - when his master had walked in on the kitchen staff, just about to demand for something to snack on. Darius had quickly stopped, but it was too late. Surprisingly, instead of being angry, his master - though he didn't show it - was quite impressed with the young lad's skills with knives. It seemed that the kid had finally found his calling. Off Darius was sent to the armoury, where he spent his days polishing and sharpening swords - that is, when he could stop tossing them around or teaching himself to use them.
Many long, tiring years had passed by this point. He was a strong, if thin, sixteen year-old. It was then that he received news that his parents had been killed in a fire at their home. Most children, you'd think, would be sad at this news, but Darius was not. They'd never cared for him, never wanted him. A resentment for his sister had been fostering for many years, until the point that - although he didn't know her - he absolutely hated her. It turned out that she had survived, though he knew not what had happened to her - nor did he care.
Once again, this little bit of normalcy was not to last. His master was accused of treachery and excuted, leaving Darius without any sort of authority one more time. He was free! This, also, would not last. His master's household, including the servants, were interrogated to discover any sort of treasonous thoughts. Darius was, thankfully, deemed innocent, but was told that he was to join the Telmarine army. One might wonder why they would want a sixteen year old in the army, but Darius was not a normal fourteen year old.
Due to his skills, which he demonstrated, he had been chosen to join the Telmarine army, which was steadily growing as to combat the threats against the Telmarines. Darius was trained, learned how to properly use the weapons for which he had great native talent, but missed out on the literacy. For what reason would a soldier need to read? Nonetheless, Darius was happy there. Finally, he had others who understood his love of weapons. The older soldiers adopted him, tried to teach him life skills, values, morals - all those important things that he had missed out on as a child.
But not even being a soldier was good enough. Lord Miraz, apparent "King" of Narnia had begun mis-using the army. They were forced to rise up against apparent traitors, other Lords that had angered Miraz. Darius and a few comrades decided that the army was no longer the place for them, and yet they could not simply quit; that was not allowed. Instead, they jumped ship at the first opportunity, becoming deserters and outlaws in one simple move. Believing that they would each have better chances of survival if they split up, Darius found himself on his own one more time. After arriving in a port, he stowed away on the first ship that he could. This decision would affect him for the rest of his life, and not necessarily in a good way.
The ship he had chosen ended up being a pirate's vessel, disguised as a mechant ship so that they could safely dock at the port. Darius awaited amongst the crates in the hold, carefully hidden - or so he thought. What he didn't know was that these pirates were paranoid, and so found him when they conducted a search of the hold. At first, the crew wanted to toss him overboard - a sure death, as Darius could not swim. The Captain then decided that he needed a cabin boy for this voyage, and if he did well enough, he might stay on permanently.
The voyage - while not disastrous - was definitely not the best. He'd never been ona ship before, and so had taken a couple days to get his "sea legs". In other words, he spent days at the rail, quite green in the face, while the crew laughed at his situation. But once he grew accustomed to the sea, he learned very quickly. The pirates were impressed with his fighting skills - he never told them about his time in the army - and so traded with the twenty year old: he'd teach them to fight, and they'd teach him how to sail and pillage. The life of a pirate, while not his preferred position, was one he loved. Or rather, it was sailing and the sea that he loved.
Once they made it through that first voyage, Darius was allowed to stay on with a proper job and a proper cut of the loot. The life of a pirate was glamourous, dangerous, and adventurous... yeah, right. Where was the glamour in fighting his way through a mast-destroying storm? Where was the glamour in going days without a meal? Where was the adventure in being beaten by their captain for failing to find a ship to loot? There was definitely danger and adventure, but the glamour was not there. Perhaps this was only because they were undoubtedly the unluckiest pirates in history.
It was on a ship that Darius became a man. He grew from the scrawny thing he had been into the tough, strong pirate that he is now. Because piracy did not bring enough riches or food, Darius began to compete in knife throwing competitions and the like to keep his fellow crew members fed. The only one who ever had a problem with that was his Captain. The man was getting older, and owned the ship upon which they sailed. He was always the one who got fed first, often leaving nothing for the rest of the crew. Darius in particular had a problem with this, and told the Captain what he thought.
While not the brightest of ideas, it was certainly bold. He got himself beaten by the crew - because the rest of them would follw the Captain's orders until the ends of the earth - and then thrown off the ship at the nearest port. Having not heard much news from Narnia for many months, he was shocked to discover that Miraz had been overthrown and young Prince Caspian crowned King alongside the four Kings and Queens of old. It gave him some hope - he wouldn't be in trouble for being a deserter any more (or so he hoped). The only problem was his years of piracy. People knew who he was, had seen him with the pirates. If only he could have that forgiven!
Because he is a known pirate, Darius has had trouble finding another ship to work on. He loathes being stuck on land, but if he must, he can survive on his winnings from whatever he's competing in. This time on land also gives him a chance to get to know the ladies...
